WoT Read Through Notes: Introduction

I'm going to start posting my impressions of the Wheel of Time books as I read through them again.  This will just be me blogging my reactions as a reader and my thoughts as I approach the humbling task of finishing the Wheel of Time Book Twelve.  As a reminder, I've read these books before, but it has now been some six or seven years since I've read through the entire series from the beginning.  It used to be my habit to read through them all when a new one came out, but life got too busy and the series too long for me to do that with the later books.

There won't be any spoilers of Book Twelve in these, though there will be spoilers to the book I'm currently reading.  So, if you're not familiar with the Wheel of Time but are planning to read the books, you might want to skip these posts.

Doing this makes me just a little wary.  I like connecting with readers and offering posts like this to give you an insight into an author's mind and into the process.  I feel that you, as the fans, have a great deal of ownership and stake in this project, as it is because of you that the Wheel of Time was so successful.

However, I don't want my posts to serve as a catalyst to panic regarding my handling of Book Twelve.  For instance, if I write that certain character is kind of bugging me in a scene, I worry that people will think that I'm making a criticism of Mr. Jordan's writing or that I'm criticizing that character in specific.  I'm not doing either.  I think Mr. Jordan's writing is fantastic--even as I read through again, I'm struck by how well he was able to weave so many different ideas together.  I really do have a sincere affection for all of these characters--I've grown up with them, as many of you have, and they feel like siblings to me.  Just as a sibling can be annoying, I feel that a character can be annoying.   It doesn't mean I intend to cut them from Book Twelve or give them any less screen time.

I thought, then, that I would make this post as an introduction.  None of my posts over the next few months are intended to give any foreshadowing of book twelve.  Please don't panic if I seem to be interpreting a character's motivations differently from how you view them.  The materials Mr. Jordan left are quite extensive, and the final book's plot and characterizations were set by him.  My goal with that book will be to as invisible as possible, and certainly don't intend to insert any of my own themes, agendas, or philosophies into it.

I will collect these blog posts in a list, and you'll be able to find them on the A MEMORY OF LIGHT section of my website, once we add it.

Cheers!

I think you tread a minefield, but youu are surely aware of that, so i just want to wish you good luck, and a supporting cheer.
I have tried to discuss the ups and downs with the books with fans on the net, but I have stopped to do that because when someone gather that amount of fans as these excellent book, there will be a huge crowd of fanatics also.
I mean those guys (and girls) who can't accept ANY critiscism at all. I hope you will be able to be able to bring up some weak points without getting flooded by death-threat-mails, so we more balanced fans can get a picture of how you feels about both our favorite points and the ... less favorite ones.

I think it will be very interesting to see how you do this work.

Good luck, and the light be with you :-)

Can we talk about how annoying Faile is? Srsly.

There are many, many WoT fans who agree with you. The subject comes up often at DragonCon panels. :-)

I can only imagine. Burned in effigy more like.

I have to admit that I, for one, would live if you gave Faile less screen time :) Bash her away as you like.

Sorry. That was me. LJ logged me off for some reason.

I love Faile, but I must agree, she's a stubborn, obnoxious, prim and pretentious bitch some times. But without her, there wouldn't be nearly as much Perrin *loves*
mariness From: [info]mariness Date: January 24th, 2008 03:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
More scenes with Berelain would increase my Perrin love AND reduce Faile screen time. I'm just saying :)
skylark913 From: [info]skylark913 Date: January 24th, 2008 08:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
Berelain can be even more petulant than Faile though. Though Faile is far more passive aggressive about it.

And she can have all the screen time she wants if she'll finally get around to dancing the sa-sara for Perrin. :P

I think I said congrats before, and I'll add a "good luck" here.

While you're finishing Jordan's work, and you've got guidelines about what goes where, I think it's pretty clear that this is your book. Because while you know what goes where, you're the how. So, you'll do what you need to do. And so ... good luck. Wishing you well. :-)

Exciting! Yet another reason I need to finish my current reads and start a WoT re-read. Yes, I'm a WoT Fan who came on over after the announcement to check you out. ;) Glad I did because Mistborn was a fantastic read that I might not have thought to pick up otherwise.

The idea of your thoughts during your reread is something I expect I'll appreciate - even if I dissagree. Hopefully most folks will be the same way.

Thank you for being so open about your reread process. I'm new to your books and blog, having picked up Elantris and Mistborn: The Final Empire after the AMoL announcement, and I am amazed at how open you are about many of your creative processes. Word docs of current projects, blogging about your thoughts on WoT characters... your willingness to share -- and trust! -- is fascinating; maybe it's because I don't follow any other authors online, but this seems totally unique to me. Many thanks for engaging your readers, and good luck with the WoT reread. Looking forward to your posts!

Well Said

Brandon,

I wouldn't worry too much about the fan reaction...I don't think it will be negative, and even if it is, they will be directed to these comments by other fans.

No worries.

I am a bit jealous though--you're catching a glimpse into the mind of RJ himself by looking at his notes. Does he have the notes chronologically ordered? It would be interesting to see the character development through his eyes---what I mean is that RJ couldn't have thought about Rand and the rest the same way during the writing of the Eye of the World as during the writing of A Memory of Light. I wonder if it would be any help to attempt to grasp the development of these characters as seen through RJ's eyes....

But then again, you may not be able to determine that through his notes....

I suppose he's the only one that could answer that....::sigh::....

Brandon

Are you starting your read through with Eye of the World? Or New Spring?
nethspace From: [info]nethspace Date: January 24th, 2008 04:45 pm (UTC) (Link)
Good luck with this - I think it'll be impossible to avoid the issues that you are trying to address here. Hopefully the reaction will remain on the various discussion boards and more level-headed people will be able to help keep them in check. So, don't dispair when you see the negative reactions. Also, since some amount of people will react badly anyway, I hope you choose not to 'restrain' yourself and your thoughts too much - I know I'll be curious to see them.

and to change the subject, I just finished Mistborn: The Final Empire and really enjoyed it.

I look forward to reading you thoughts during your re-read.

I have turned a few friends on to WoT over the past 6 months and it has been very entertaining to listen to them talk about Wot as they go along in the books.

I plan on doing a re-read through all of the WoT books myself once we get closer to the release of AMoL.

Brandon,

I just wanted to say that I am a long time WoT fan. I am new to your work, about half way through Elantris which I am loving. Obviously your words will come off the page differently than those of Robert Jordan, but if his wife has the confidence that you can do the work justice, then so should others.

I will be interested to read your thoughts on rereading Wheel of Time, I had just reread the first 2 books myself when I found out about Robert Jordan's death and am likely to finish the rest over the next year or so between other books. So I am looking forward to seeing your take on the Wheel of Time, while also reading your books for the first time.

Congratulations and good luck.

thank-you for tackling this project.

I have only recently found out that the author had passed away. This is sad for all family & friends and I send my condolences.
For an avid reader of his work it was difficult to believe the characters I have grown with will not conclude their journey.
Good luck in the project.
Hope that the book (don't care if in 2 parts) will be a great project.
Thank-you from someone who truly enjoyed the wheel of time series so far.

this should be really interesting :) though, it'll be much like discussing the books with a fellow fan, I'm sure :P

besides, the truest fans are those who not only adore their author's work, but also offer criticism where necessary ;)

again, the best of luck with AMoL! you probably have a few million people supporting Harriet's choice standing ready to offer encouragements, anyway ;)

I think this will be a fantastic project, The transparency that you are writing with is absolutely awesome. I tend to reread Jordan every few years and am always amazed at what new things I picked up. This last time, the size and scope of the battle around Cairhen stuck in my mind as I have been busy watching LoTR and Narnia with their epic massive driven CG battles.

Please be yourself as you write this book. Jordan's shoes are too large to fit in, plus they sometimes pinch even his toes - only by finding your own style, even if you are working from his outline, will TMoL come off as anything other then a imitation.

Just added you to my friends list after reading Elantris. I can't tell you how much I appreciate an author who actually writes stand-alone novels instead of insane mega-epics. Much as I've been a fan of Jordan, your work has been a breath of fresh air in the world of epic fantasy. I'm sure you hear it a lot, but keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing Mistborn 3 published as I'm not planning to read the Final Empire and Well of Ascension until I can read all three without having to anticipate for the better part of a year.
