Hero of Ages Chapter One - Mistborn
Weblog for Writer Brandon Sanderson
Hero of Ages Chapter One

I'm back from Denver, and had a blast at Worldcon.  I'll try to post some more thoughts later, but specifically I enjoyed the Wheel of Time panel.

I've put up the next sample chapter for Mistborn Three. (Actually, it's the first real sample chapter, since the last chunk I posted was the prologue.)  Enjoy!  Remember, October 14th is the magic day. when the book will be in stores!

I've also begun to move over some of the other sample chapters from their old sections on the website and into the Library section, so they're all in one place and easy to browse.  The first to be getting this update is Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians (the sequel to which will be hitting stores this November.)  Once I'm through the Hero of Ages sample chapters, I'll add a few Alcatraz Two chapters as well.  (I really need to give some shine to the Alcatraz Portal, which is looking rather drab with only two gems.  I'm working on some more bonus content there.)

Hey Brandon,

aMoL is up to 40%? Is it an error or is this true?

At this weekend's Wheel of Time panel at Worldcon, Brandon said that 200,000 words are finished, which is 40% of 500,000 words. But he also said the total might end up 600,000 words.

Yes, 40% is right. I was guessing myself at 35% before I left for worldcon, but I didn't have time to include the 20k I wrote during the drive to Idaho, the few days in Idaho, the drive to Denver, and then the time I spent in Denver. I'm inching toward 200k, as Peter indicated.

Amazing opening to the finale! You have really set high expectations for an action packed conclusion.

I like what I'm reading, but I'm really still not sure I like Elend's change in power. Its a good character development I think, but I think one3 of my favorite aspects of him was that he was the guy without any special abilities. He was just an idealist who had great potential leadership.

I spent a long time making this particular decision back when I was finishing Mistborn 2 and getting ready for Mistborn 3. There's more in the MB3 annotations, which I should start posting this fall. But the decision to give Elend the plot cycle he has in Book Three was very carefully considered.

In the end, he had just spent too long being the guy that everyone needed to protect. Where book three is going, he couldn't be as fragile as he had been--and there were some aspects of his personality I couldn't explore without letting him see the world a little more as Vin does.

I trust your storytelling, Brandon; I have yet to be disappointed by your writing.

That said, a major character change like this does take some getting used to, and Elend the action hero is a huge change that I expect we'll be getting at least a little more background on in book 3. The development of Elend throughout the first couple parts of WoA were something I liked immensely. But if I read the Elend from Part 3 right after reading Mistborn 1 I think that would be a comparable reaction to what I'm getting from this. I'm not saying that's bad, or it doesn't work as I've only read the tiniest bit as have most here.

I love the series, I'm just putting my opinion out there based on a tiny segment of what is obviously a much larger work.

I just finished reading book two last week. This really whets my appetite for book three. Is it October yet?

Next Chapter Please

Loved the two chapters. When are you putting up the next chapter?

Re: Next Chapter Please

Just did, partially because you reminded me. ;)
